The City of Kenora supports community groups by hosting flag raising ceremonies at City Hall. Charitable and non-profit organizations can request a flag raising to promote their cause or event. By flying community flags, we celebrate Kenora’s diversity, inclusivity, and what is important to the community.
Request a flag raising
Complete the online application to request a flag raising ceremony at City Hall.
You must apply at least three weeks before the day you wish to have the flag raising event.
Your Community Flag Raising Application will be reviewed to ensure the request is consistent with the City of Kenora Flag Protocol Policy and the City Clerk's Office will advise you of the status of your request within one week.
We welcome applications from non-profit and charitable community groups. We will do our best to accommodate all requests. Approvals are granted when the flag raising is related to:
- National or independence days important to the residents of Kenora
- Fundraising drives important to the residents of Kenora
- Multicultural and civic events important to the residents of Kenora
Community groups must provide their own flag.
Rules for flag raising ceremonies
We want to ensure that all flags are flown at City of Kenora facilities in a consistent and appropriate manner. Review the flag raising rules:
- Approvals and use of the City Hall flagpole will be granted on a first come-first served basis.
- When more than one flag raising request occurs for the period, the application received first will be flown on the City Hall flagpole.
- Flags will be flown for a maximum of one month.
- Maximum number of community flags to be flown at any one time will be one.
- The Canadian flag and Ontario flag must be flown at all times.
- When multiple flag raisings are requested by more than one community organization, the City will try to coordinate the requests and reserves the right to determine the lead organization.
- Individuals, groups or associations requesting flag raisings are required to provide the flag to be raised and must pick up the flag once it is removed. The City is not responsible for storing flags for any group or responsible for safe storage of community group flags.
- Individuals, groups or associations requesting flag raisings must contact any media that they wish to be present.
- The City will make every effort to have the Mayor or Deputy Mayor, along with a minimum of one member of Council, present for the flag raising ceremony, depending on availability of Council.
- The City reserves the right to cancel a flag raising in the case of an unforeseen circumstance.
- The City will not fly the flag of a group or organization that are deemed inappropriate or offensive in nature or those supporting discrimination, prejudice, political or religious movements, violence or racism.
