The City of Kenora is developing an Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) to improve where we walk, cycle or roll in our community. We want people of all ages and abilities to be comfortable and have easy access to walking, cycling, rolling - or active transportation options.

What is active transportation
Active transportation is any human-powered mode of transportation, such as walking, cycling, or using a mobility aid. It describes any active trip you make to get from one place to another - whether it is to work, school, the store, or spending time with family and friends in nature. Other new and emerging transportation modes such as e-bikes and e-scooters can also fit in this category and may use the same trails and pathways as fully human powered modes.
Active transportation makes a more balanced and efficient transportation system and supports more healthy, liveable, and vibrant communities. Some of the benefits of active transportation include:
- Health and fitness - creates more physically active communities, promotes psychological well-being, and builds movement into daily routines.
- Community connections - active transportation encourages social interaction, which helps to build trust, respect, understanding and a sense of co-operation amongst all community members.
- Safety - dedicated walking, cycling, and rolling space reduces the risk of injury for all road users, which makes people more comfortable to use active transportation modes.
- Environmental - more people walking and cycling can help improve air quality through a reduction in Traffic Related Air Pollution (TRAP) as well as reducing motor vehicle congestion by having fewer vehicles on the roads.
- Economy and tourism - neighbourhoods and destinations that are inviting and accessible via walking or biking can attract more visitors, who will in turn be patrons of local businesses.
