Test Your Home for Radon, City Offers 100 Free Test Kits to Residents
The City’s Fire and Emergency Services is participating in Take Action on Radon’s ‘100 Radon Test Kit Challenge’ and is encouraging Kenora residents to test their homes for radon. We have 100 free radon test kits available to give away to residents.
To obtain a kit, pre-register at takeactiononradon.ca/100-radon-test-kit-challenge/. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation email from Take Action Radon and be invited to attend a one-hour Radon Information Session held on October 28, 2024, at 7 p.m. Participants may choose to attend the session in-person at the Kenora Fire Hall, located at 100 Fourteenth Street North, on or by Zoom. Participants must pre-register online and will receive a link with information to join the session.
The session will be led by Executive of the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST) and Project Manager of Take Action on Radon, Pam Warkentin, and will cover basic information about radon, its health impacts, and details about the ‘100 Radon Test Kit Challenge’.
“Whether this is the first time you’re hearing about radon or the hundredth time… if you haven’t gotten around to testing your home, this is your chance to stop putting it off and get your radon test,” says Pam Warkentin.
Confirmed participants can pick up their radon test during the in-person session or can visit the Kenora Fire Hall up until Friday, November 8, 2024. The Fire and Emergency Services team is offering to deliver kits to participants who are unable to pick them up.
Kits will remain in homes for a minimum of three months. From February 14 to 21, 2025, homeowners can deliver their used kits to the Kenora Fire Hall. Fire and Emergency Services will return the kits to Take Action on Radon to have the kits sent to a lab for testing. Fire and Emergency Services can be contacted at 807-467-2090 to arrange pickup if a homeowner cannot drop off their used kit. Each participant registered in the ‘100 Radon Test Kit Challenge’ will receive an individual report of the results by email from Take Action on Radon.
“By participating in the '100 Radon Test Kit Challenge', the City aims to empower our community to take proactive measures to prevent radon-related health risks,” says Kyle Attanasio, Chief Administrative Officer. “We are glad to partner with Take Action on Radon to offer 100 kits to our local community.”
It is the perfect time to Take Action on Radon. Pre-register today to secure your free radon test kit.
