The City has received 25cm of snow over the past five days. City crews are actively performing snow and ice control activities, including sanding and salting, City-wide to improve traction on roadways and bridges. City crews have been working overtime in addition to their regular hours to keep up with the changing road and sidewalk conditions.
Slush and snow-covered roads can make driving dangerous. Also, at this time of year where freezing/thawing conditions occur, it creates ice each morning if there is sitting moisture on the road through the night. New snowfall (even minimal) over existing sanded areas, is creating fresh ice layers over existing sand that requires re-application. While City roads crews are actively applying sand, the public needs to ensure they are driving to the current conditions of the roadways.
Tips for a safe winter drive
- Give more distance between cars, slow down, and allow yourself more travel time.
- Clear snow off your car windows, windshields, roof, trunk and hood before driving. Good visibility keeps yourself and others safe.
- Remember: speed limits are set for ideal conditions.
- Look twice for pedestrians crossing the road.
- Give extra time and space to stop in bad weather.
- Prevent hydroplaning by scanning ahead and slowing down.
- If you hydroplane, ease off the gas and keep steering in the direction you want to go – avoid braking.
- If you hit black ice and start to skid, don’t brake. Ease off the gas, and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go.
Request for service
The public is encouraged to use the self-reporting tool to log their concerns about road conditions and report potholes or other service requests. Find the Request for Service tool on Kenora.ca.
