The City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services is urging residents to take a proactive step in ensuring their safety as they prepare to "fall back" for Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, November 5.
"Daylight Savings Time marks the moment when we set our clocks back one hour, gaining an extra hour of sleep. It also serves as a reminder to check and update the batteries in your smoke alarms," said Deputy Fire Chief Dexter Hupe. "Properly functioning smoke alarms are crucial in safeguarding your home and loved ones in case of a fire emergency.
City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services advises residents to take the following precautions:
- Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries: Replace all smoke alarm batteries with fresh, long-lasting batteries. This guarantees that the smoke alarms will function efficiently and effectively in case of an emergency.
- Test Your Smoke Alarms: Conduct a thorough test of all smoke alarms throughout the house to verify their functionality and audibility. Press the “test” button on each device, listening for a loud and distinct sound to indicate proper operation. If any alarms fail t work or emit weak sounds, immediately replace them.
- Clean Your Smoke Alarms: Gently dust smoke alarms to remove any accumulated dust particles. Dust build-up can impede the devices and reduce their sensitivity to smoke, diminishing their effectiveness.
Remember, it’s the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Additionally, the City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services recommends installing smoke alarms inside each bedroom.
