The City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Service is proud to announce its participation in “Saved by the Beep”, Ontario's first Test Your Smoke Alarm Day scheduled for Thursday, September 28th! This initiative aims to raise awareness about the vital role that smoke alarms play in keeping residents safe during a fire emergency.
Last year there were 133 fire fatalities in the province. Fires can occur unexpectedly and can devastate homes and endanger lives within minutes. Properly working smoke alarms are known to reduce the risks associated with fires, providing residents with crucial time to escape to safety.
Smoke alarms are indispensable tools that provide crucial early warning signals, enabling individuals and families to escape safely in case of a fire. However, these devices often go overlooked and without proper maintenance, they may become ineffective. The purpose of the Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is to remind residents to test their smoke alarms regularly and ensure that they are functioning optimally.
As part of Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, all Ontarians are encouraged to learn more about smoke alarms, fire safety, and home fire escape planning, which can save the lives of you and your loved ones. Most importantly, we want you to test your smoke alarms!
"Testing your smoke alarm is a quick and simple task that can save lives because you may only have seconds to safely escape a fire in your home. That’s why early detection of fire is absolutely vital. Only working smoke alarms provide those precious seconds you and your family need to safely escape," stated Deputy Fire Chief Dexter Hupe. "We urge all residents of Kenora and the surrounding areas to ensure that their smoke alarms are in working condition. By doing so, we can enhance the safety and well-being of our community."
Residents are encouraged to participate in the Test Your Smoke Alarm Day by following these simple steps:
- Test your smoke alarm: Press the test button on the device to ensure it emits a loud, audible sound.
- Change the batteries: Make sure to replace the batteries of your smoke alarms at least once a year, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Clean your smoke alarms: Remove any dust or debris that could affect the alarm's effectiveness.
- Replace outdated smoke alarms: Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years or as indicated by the manufacturer.
Remember, it’s the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Additionally, the City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Service recommends installing smoke alarms inside each bedroom. This comprehensive coverage ensures early detection of fire hazards, providing critical seconds for residents to respond appropriately.
