Normal winter weather fluctuations in Northwestern Ontario create perfect conditions for spring pothole formation. Our Roads Division takes steps to quickly repair potholes. Potholes become much more prevalent during the spring due to the freeze/thaw cycle. Water seeps into cracks in the pavement, saturating the soil underneath. Temperatures drop and the water in the soil freezes and expands, pushing up the asphalt. The constant traffic load breaks the asphalt causing surface holes. Further traffic load and weather conditions continue to cause the granular base to erode leaving potholes.
The pothole crew is working to fix potholes that are developing due to the freeze-thaw cycle and warmer temperatures. Traffic control will be in place, and signs will be posted in the work areas. Motorists are asked to be cautious and slow down when approaching a crew at work.
If you notice a pothole in your area, please report it through the online Request for Service tool on Kenora.ca or call the pothole hotline at 807-467-2334. The Request for Service will be logged and prioritized for fixing based on high traffic and priority areas.
We ask that motorists do their part by exercising caution, reducing speed, maintaining optimum tire pressure in their vehicles and avoiding potholes where possible.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience during the pothole work.
