The Portage Bay Bridge is closed until further notice after a thorough conditional assessment found the bridge no longer safe for vehicle or pedestrian access.
The City advises that this closure is expected to be longer-term as we work towards necessary repairs.
During the week of October 21, the Portage Bay Bridge underwent a thorough conditional assessment conducted by a third-party engineer. The City undertakes regular assessments of its bridges on a schedule.
The preliminary results from this year’s assessment indicate that the 99-year-old bridge, in its current condition, is no longer safe for vehicle or pedestrian access. However, the third-party engineer has confirmed that boat traffic may continue to navigate safely beneath the bridge.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, Greg Breen stated, “This closure will impact members of the community’s travel, but this closure is essential to ensuring everyone’s safety. We will take the appropriate time to ensure repairs are done correctly”.
To prioritize the safety of residents, the City has installed additional fencing and signage to prevent access to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to follow the detour routes in place.
The safety of our community is the top priority. The City recognizes the inconvenience this closure presents. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through this process.
