Today, Tuesday, November 16, Council directed administration to install the new Coney Island Footbridge structure with temporary construction railings and lighting to ensure access to Coney Island continues for the 2022/2023 winter season.
The Coney Island Footbridge connects mainland Kenora to Coney Island in the winter months. The Footbridge spans approximately 296 feet in length and is installed in November of each year to provide connection to Coney Island during the winter season. The Footbridge is removed annually in April or May with the installation and removal being weather dependent.
The Footbridge experienced irreparable damage on May 9th and the bridge was declared to be damaged irreparably following a thorough engineering review of the structure. Design works were engaged with Stantec Engineering to design a new Footbridge and funding approval for the replacement was provided by Council in August.
The new main floating platform, aluminum ramps, and steel cable elements are ready for installation. Temporary railings and lighting will now be installed until the permanent railings are completed and ready for installation. Delivery on the permanent side railings and lighting is not anticipated until late December.
The new Coney Island Footbridge is superior to the previous structure and will have improved width, superior lighting and overall structural durability. Installation begins today with anticipated completion on Thursday, November 17th.
