Keewatin Library Update, Senior Programming and Library Services Continue
The City announced on June 28, 2024, that the Keewatin Library and Keewatin Senior Centre, located on Ottawa Street, will be closed until further notice due to structural issues with the roof. The safety of residents is our top priority, and we are committed to addressing this situation with care while continuing to provide library and senior programs to the community.
Upon discovery, the City engaged our insurer to begin the assessment of the roof failure. In mid-July, an external engineering firm determined the building and discovered significant bending and damage to the roof, linked to its age and various renovations over the years are contributing factors to the condition of the roof. The roof’s design has led to uneven snow accumulation over the years, contributing to the ongoing stress on the structure.
On Monday, September 16, 2024, the City received preliminary findings that repairs to the Keewatin Library roof would not be covered by insurance. As a result of the claim being denied, Administration will be bringing a report to Council in October to consider next steps for the building including the possibility to appeal the claim, taking steps towards selecting funding and proceeding with repair, or another course of action.
We recognize the importance of this facility to the community and its seniors. During this time, the City Administration will remain adaptable, continuing to provide library services and senior programming through alternative locations.
The City has been dedicated to continuing to offer its senior programming in a safe and welcoming space. During the temporary closure of the Keewatin Library, we pivoted to offering services in the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena during the summer months.
Starting Wednesday, October 2, we will host weekly lunches at St. Andrews United Church, with costs shared between a local donor and the City. During these Wednesday lunches, the Library team will be adding these to their book delivery schedule. For New Horizon members wishing to request books prior to attending the Wednesday lunches, please contact the Kenora Library at the number below.
Additionally, from now until December 13, 2024, New Horizons, in partnership with the City of Kenora, will offer programming at St. Andrews United Church, including activities such as chair yoga, bridge, mahjong, cardio drumming, and crib. To become a member of the New Horizons and to receive a copy of the detailed schedule, please call (807) 468-8221 or email New Horizons newhorizon18@shaw.ca.
Library services continue to be available to all residents at the Kenora branch, with digital services accessible 24/7. Our enthusiastic library team is dedicated to bringing books closer to the Keewatin community by providing book pickups twice a week. The public can find the schedule of these pickup times and locations on the Library’s Facebook page, along with regular reminders.
Additionally, for those with mobility challenges, their team is glad to offer home delivery services to ensure everyone can enjoy the library’s resources. To arrange for this convenient service please contact the Kenora Branch at 807-467-2081.
“Our dedicated library team is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring that Keewatin residents receive their books and enjoy continuous access to library services. These pop-up pickups and home deliveries not only prioritize safety and accessibility but also reflect our team's hard work and enthusiasm in meeting community needs," says Crystal Alcock, CEO/Head Librarian.
The book return drop boxes remain open at both locations. Book returns can continue to be deposited at either location and are checked regularly. The return drop boxes are designed to make returning books as easy as possible. Readers can use whichever location is most convenient. Which drop-off box is used does not affect our services.
The Kenora Public Library continues to offer upcoming events and programs that locals can participate in. For a full list of activities, including book pickups in Keewatin, go to the Library’s Featured Events.
We deeply appreciate the public's understanding and patience as we address the structural issues with this facility. The City extends its heartfelt thanks to the public for their continued support and cooperation during this time. We remain committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all community members.
