The City and CUPE have been in collective bargaining aimed at achieving a renewal of the collective agreement for our 140 front-line workers. The bargaining teams have been meeting since October 17, 2024.
During this time, the bargaining teams have reached agreement on a number of issues, however a few key items, such as labour market adjustments, general salary increases, bonus vacation days and double-time provisions, remain outstanding.
Last week, following three days of bargaining, with the assistance of a provincially appointed conciliation officer, CUPE requested that the Ministry of Labour issue a No Board notice. This notice begins the countdown to the first day the union can legally take its members on strike.
We have now received the notice, and the strike deadline is march 8 at 12:01 a.m.
This does not mean there will be a strike, as the bargaining teams can continue to meet during this period. The City remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached. In the event that a deal cannot be reached, there is a full contingency plan that will see the continuation of winter maintenance and some continued services. Details will follow closer to the strike deadline.
