The City is excited to announce the launch of an improved transit service called "The Wave" on October 15, in partnership with service provider Via. This updated service aims to help residents and visitors seamlessly reach their desired destinations within the community.
The new transit system will migrate from a conventional fixed route system to a modernized microtransit model, utilizing smaller vehicles for on-demand service. Microtransit is an upgraded model of transportation that collects trip requests and groups passengers into shared rides, in real-time. It utilizes a network of virtual bus stops enhancing connectivity between neighborhoods and provides reliable, dependable services.
The City is hosting an Open House on September 18 at 6 p.m. at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre in the Rotary Room. Our partner, Via, will be present during the Open House and will be available to answer questions, inform the community about the service, and explain the benefits of this new transportation model for our community.
“The Wave” will improve access for residents, facilitating commutes to work and school, errands, and appointments throughout the community. With increased flexibility, riders can book rides that fit their schedules without needing to plan ahead. To request a ride, residents can simply call or use the user-friendly app which allows for easy booking and tracking of trips. The app provides a straightforward corner-to-corner experience, making it easy for residents and visitors to arrange their transportation. The service will operate reliably from Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at an affordable rate of $2.50 per ride.
This updated microtransit system will increase efficiency as it optimizes routing with limited detours, allowing multiple riders to be grouped into a single car. Safety is a top priority, with clean vehicles and a maximum of six passengers to ensure a comfortable ride for everyone. Additionally, The Wave contributes to sustainability by grouping passengers, helping to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
Mayor Andrew Poirier states, “reliable public transportation is a priority for Council and we have committed to a new model of public transportation that will deliver services in a safe and reliable manner. This investment in microtransit demonstrates Council’s commitment for innovative adaptation to change and the growing needs of our community. We are excited to all jump on and ride The Wave”.
