The City is pleased to announce a process to develop its first Sustainability Action Plan is underway, which is due to be completed by the end of 2021.
City Staff and the new Sustainability Advisory Committee will work together to develop an action-orientated plan. The early stage of the process will involve public engagement opportunities to gather information about how to build a more sustainable community.
Residents and other community partners are encouraged to get involved. There will be online surveys and virtual community workshops at each of the three phases of the process. Announcements about opportunities to participate will be posted on the City’s social media and website. The Phase 1 online survey is now live and feedback is welcome.
The Sustainability Advisory Committee will first meet on February 18, 2021 and the first Community Engagement Session is scheduled for February 23, 2021 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. Register now to attend the virtual community workshop.
Sustainability means different things to different people. For the purposes of our Plan, we are defining sustainability in the context of community actions that are economically viable, socially equitable, and environmentally friendly.
The City of Kenora’s Sustainability Action Plan will include at least ten projects that can be undertaken by the City and its partners to effect meaningful change. These projects may build on existing initiatives or be new. They must be projects that can be completed over the next ten years with resources that are already available or that can be readily obtained.
Projects to be considered for this Plan may include actions that guide local efforts to: reduce greenhouse gas emissions, move toward more sustainable sources of energy, reduce waste, and / or manage the impacts of a changing climate.
“Climate change is real, and it is happening. As a Municipality we have a responsibility to take action and build on what is being done. Our economy and wellbeing depends upon the environment and we have a duty to address the issues we are faced with. We all have a role to play in addressing the impacts of climate change within our municipality. We require collective action that comes from people working together and taking responsibility to seek solutions. The development of a Sustainability Action Plan is the first step to build on the important work already underway in our community” stated Councillor Rory McMillan, Council appointee on the new committee.
