This City is pleased to announce that a significant provincial investment of $5,961,588 in City infrastructure, was confirmed in January. The City was able to secure this funding through an application to the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream, under the Province of Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.
The Ontario government is investing $400 million in projects across the province to help build, repair and maintain municipal roads, bridges and culverts that will promote housing growth in communities. The investment will support Kenora's growth by enhancing and rehabilitating the infrastructure that supports future development in our community.
“Today’s investment is a testament to our partnership with municipal leaders like Mayor Poirier,” said Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora–Rainy River and Minister of Northern Development. “We know there is more work to do, and by continuing to leverage every tool at our disposal to invest in the roads, bridges, and services that connect us, we’re laying the foundation for a stronger, more resilient future.”
This $5,961,588 investment will enhance safety and connectivity within our community, and be allocated to three key projects on Lakeview Drive / Highway 17. Planned enhancements include:
- Paving and resurfacing of Lakeview Drive
- Corrosion protection and structural rehabilitation of the Keewatin Channel Bridge
- Intersection safety improvements at Parsons Street and Minnesota Street
“We thank Ontario’s Ministry of Infrastructure for the generous investment in improving Kenora’s roadways, bridges, and intersections,” stated Mayor Andrew Poirier. “This crucial funding will enhance traffic flow, promote active transportation, and help renew our aging infrastructure. The support from the Hon. Greg Rickford, alongside the City’s contributions, is vital for our community’s growth and development. Investing in improving our roads and bridges is an investment in the future of our community.”
Through strategic planning, City administration actively explores and identifies potential funding sources and cost-saving measures to deliver value to the City’s taxpayers. Securing funding like this positions the City to make meaningful improvements that will strengthen our infrastructure and enhance the overall quality of life for all residents in Kenora.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, Greg Breen added, “I’m proud of the work by staff to secure this funding. We’re going to get more work done with less, multiplying our tax dollars to deliver on bigger infrastructure improvements sooner. I look forward to getting shovels in the ground, starting this Spring.”
The City and Council express their gratitude to the Province of Ontario for their commitment to assisting in creating safe and reliable infrastructure. These funds will significantly support the City in ensuring that families and residents have access to well-maintained roads and bridges, promoting stronger and more connected neighbourhoods throughout Kenora.
