The City has revealed a modernized method for motorists to pay for parking. New “pay-by-plate” parking kiosks have been installed in different locations in downtown and have now been activated.
To use the “pay–by-plate” method, the vehicle plate number is required. The customer parks at metered space and then finds the closest kiosk to enter plate information and purchase parking time. There are signs at the end of each parking section with directional arrows pointing towards the kiosk location. Each of the twenty kiosks can be identified by the “Pay Here” signage.
The kiosks accept coins (toonies, loonies and quarters), credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), and can be used with the Hotspot app. The maximum time limits still apply for on-street metered spaces.
A benefit of “pay-by-plate” method is that the customer does not have to return to their vehicle to place a receipt on the dash, as our By-law Enforcement Officers can check if parking has been paid for via their mobile devices. It is recommended to keep the receipt while parked just in case a parking ticket is issued in error. Additionally, if the customer moves to a new parking space and still has time left on the meter, they do not have to purchase parking again until the original time has expired.
The City will begin removal of individual parking meters in these new kiosk areas in the spring, and until then, both options to pay are available. Removing individual meters will assist with the ease of snow removal, and provide additional space on busy sidewalks. The modernized method improves a pedestrian friendly zone and provides additional options to customers when using parking in the downtown area.
Some areas of the City will still have individual meters as the kiosks are intended for use with larger sections of parking such as the Harbourtown Centre.
