Council approves December meeting schedule
Council approved a meeting date change for the December Committee of the Whole Council meeting. The meeting will be held on Monday, December 5, 2022 with the regular Council meeting on December 20, 2022.
Council approves contract agreement for Coney Island Park
Council approved staff recommendation to enter into a lease agreement with Jennifer Schott to provide operations and maintenance of Coney Island Park for three years, 2023 to 2025. Two proposals were received in the Expression of Interest process and the successful proponent was Jennifer Schott.
Council accepts Parks and Recreation Master Plan
Council accepted the Parks and Recreation Master Plan presented by Michael Roma of RC Strategies. The Parks and Recreation Master Plan provides direction to Council and administration in regards to future planning for departmental work plans, budgets and capital projects related to parks and recreation in the City. With this guiding document, it also provides a plan which may align well with any funding opportunities that are presented in the future to assist us with growth in Parks and Recreation assets and programming in Kenora.
Council advocates for inclusion in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot
The recent geographic expansion of the Thunder Bay catchment area for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot did not include the City of Kenora, but did include most other municipalities surrounding us. Council is petitioning the Government of Canada and Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission to include the City of Kenora in the Thunder Bay catchment area for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, or, as a standalone community.
This program is extremely important to our local businesses to assist in attracting and retaining skilled immigrants in response to labour market challenges in our community.
Council supports funding applications
Council supported staff recommendation to submit funding applications for the second phase of rehabilitation and renovation of McLeod Park to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for $558,123 and to FedNor for $558,123.Council also committed of up to $124,026 for the project to be funded through Municipal Accommodation Tax revenues and the Future Land Development Reserve. Successful funding applications help with investment into Kenora’s Harbourfront to stimulate the local economy and attract residents and tourists.
