September 30th, the City of Kenora commemorates the history and legacy of residential schools by wearing Orange Shirts to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and to renew The City of Kenora’s commitment to truth and reconciliation.
Building relationships and recognizing Indigenous peoples’ rich history and diverse culture is a key priority of Council and part of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation. Identified by Grand Council Treaty 3 as an important step to advancing reconciliation and to deepening our relationships with Indigenous peoples, in the 2022 Operating Budget, Council created the Indigenous Relations Specialist position.
The Indigenous Relations Specialist will work in partnership with Indigenous organizations and First Nations Communities within urban and neighbouring territories, and City departments, boards and committees to create opportunities for meaningful collaboration, partnership, inclusion in opportunities for growth, while strengthening the City’s capacity to work more effectively with Indigenous Peoples.
As an advisor to Senior Leadership and Council, the Indigenous Relations Specialist will bring a focused and cultural lens to the strategic direction of the City which will be used to inform and further develop current and future municipal services, projects and programs.
