Library and Senior Centre Programming Continues Despite Closure of Keewatin Library
On June 28, the City and Kenora Public Library Board announced that the Keewatin Library and Keewatin Senior Centre, located on Ottawa Street, will be closed until further notice due to structural issues with the roof. The safety of residents and staff is our primary concern, and we are taking all necessary steps to address the situation with compassion and diligence.
Senior centre programs have currently been relocated to the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena, while there are no ice rentals. A longer-term plan is underway as we explore alternative options. The City is dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming space for all senior program participants.
While the closure of these facilities impacts the local community, the City and the Public Library Board are committed to maintaining the library and senior programming without interruption.
“The safety of staff and patrons is our main concern, and due to circumstances beyond our control, the Kenora Public Library Board is to follow the advice of the engineers and order a temporary closure to the physical building,” states Marj Poirer, Board Chair. “The Kenora Public Library understands the importance of having a branch in Keewatin, and is committed to ensuring ongoing services, to the best of our abilities. Every effort will be made to ensure transparency to the residents of Keewatin with respect to next steps”.
Library services are available at the Kenora branch, with digital services accessible 24/7. Book returns can continue to be deposited into the outdoor book return at the Keewatin Branch. The Kenora Public Library has many upcoming events and programs that locals can participate in. For a full list of activities go to the Library’s Featured Events at: https://calendar.kenora.ca/Library.
Additionally, library staff are ready to deliver books to Keewatin with both weekly pop-up book pickups and home deliveries. “Our team is dedicated to ensure that Keewatin residents get their books and continue to have access to library services”, says Crystal Alcock, CEO/Head Librarian, “these pop-up pickups and home deliveries ensure safety and accessibility”. If the demand is high, the library will be offering more than once a week pop-up pickups. To arrange this service, please contact the Kenora Branch at 807-467-2081.
Extra book pickups will also be available at the Keewatin Ball Diamonds during Fresh Air Fridays on July 12 and July 26, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Updates on repair work will be provided. To stay informed, please visit Kenora.ca and follow the City of Kenora and Kenora Public Library on Facebook.
Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated as we all navigate through this together. The City and Kenora Public Library Board thanks the public for their continued support and cooperation as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our community members in the Keewatin neighbourhood.
