Schools in Canada are organized into districts which are governed by locally-elected school boards. These school boards are regulated by provincial legislations and provide a political base in their local community but not part of municipal government.  A portion of municipal property taxes are allocated to education and school boards.

There are two school boards in Kenora, Keewatin Patricia District School Board and Kenora Catholic District School Board, both have elementary and secondary schools within their districts. Please visit the school board websites for school listings.

There are many options for post secondary education in Kenora to obtain a diploma, degree or certificate. Programs are constantly being updated to suit the needs of Kenora residents and the local industry.

Literacy Rate

As a country, Canada has one of the highest literacy rates of all nations around the world. Canada has a high achieving education system that consistently ranks among the highest of all countries on international assessments such as PIRLS and PISA for school age children and young people

Mandatory school age

Mandatory school age for young people varies depending on province but is in general from age 5-7 to 16 -18 years old. The adult literacy rate is 99% with adults scoring lower on assessments than school age.  Some gifted or talented children may be ready to start school at an earlier age while others may benefit from being a little older. By law, all children must start school by their sixth birthday.
