Seventh Avenue South Bridge Work Resumes
Please be advised work will resume on the Seventh Avenue South Bridge site starting on Monday, June 25, 2018.
Removal of the temporary pedestrian bridge will begin the morning of June 25, 2018. There will be short delays for boat traffic on Laurensons Creek when the pedestrian bridge is lifted from the crossing. Flag persons will be on site to direct boaters.
Once the pedestrian bridge is removed, the new bridge installation project will proceed. As the installation project moves forward, boaters can expect short delays on the Creek at various times throughout July. Flag persons and signage will be posted on the Creek to notify boaters of the disruptions.
Further public notices will be issued when the Creek will be closed. It will be necessary to close the Creek at certain stages of the project; however, the exact dates will depend on the progress of the work. The new bridge is expected to be in place by the end of August.
The City extends thanks to the public for their cooperation and patience during this infrastructure project.
When will the bridge work start?
The project will begin the morning of June 25, after school is dismissed for the summer.
How long will it take to put the new bridge in place?
It will take most of the summer to remove the temporary pedestrian bridge, prepare the site, and install the new bridge. It is expected to be in place by the end of August 2018.
Will boats be able to travel on Laurensons Creek?
There will be short delays some days and short closures on others. We will do our best to notify the public about lengthy closures to minimize disruptions for boaters. There will be flag persons and signage posted when there are closures.
Why is the bridge being replaced?
The original bridge was built in 1933 and during a bridge inspection in 2016, it was determined the bridge had reached the end of its life cycle. While the City worked on a solution, the bridge was put under a 5 tonne gross vehicle weight limit until it was removed in 2018.
What is the new bridge made of?
The new bridge will be constructed of precast concrete sections. The retaining walls, abutments and the bridge deck will be fabricated off site and transported to the project which will speed up construction. The type of bridge to be constructed was a condition of the project contract to ensure boat traffic disruptions would be minimized.
